Don’t overlook the option of community college

Many people are doubtful of the effectiveness of community college and say it’s more like “13th grade”, but what a lot of people may not know is that there are a number of benefits in attending community college after graduation.

According to Community College Review, the average community college tuition varies from $4,834-$8,593 per year. Tuition is cheaper for in-state students. For Maryland, in 2018, Gov. Larry Hogan passed a bill that will allow some students to go to community college for free and will allow graduates of the College Promise program to attend four year public state colleges at cost.

As mentioned by U.S News, annual tuition at a 4-year university can cost tens of thousands of dollars.  For example, at a public state university like University of Maryland College Park, the average tuition for in-state students is $10,181 and $32,045 for out-of-state students per year. Private four-year universities like Georgetown University in DC cost $50,547 per year.

Despite this huge difference in tuition costs, many students have been convinced to go straight to a university after high school because any students may find that Community College isn’t at the same level of education as a 4 year university would, many feel that community college is much more easier than a four university. Many students prefer going to a university instead of a community college because they feel as their diploma has more value since they’re coming from a big and recognized university. Community colleges aren’t as big as universities or as known and people don’t see it as a challenge, it’s easier to graduate from community college. However, research shows that attending community saves students hundreds of dollars in student loans.

As stated by the New York Times, university graduates graduating from a 4 year college graduate with an average of $28,560 in student loans.  Hundreds of thousands of dollars aren’t an issue with community college, and they also allow students to have a more flexible class schedule.

With community colleges,  students have more control over the day and time of courses. Additionally, because these colleges are typically in the students’ community,  they get to see their families as usual, students also get to work, and do fun activities during their free time with friends in the area. Students can also save money on travel expenses students normally spend when they attend universities out of state. Students that spend a lot of time at home with their family, going far for college might be a little difficult transition for them. Community college would be the best suit for students that are used to always being home. According to college raptor community college gives students the college experience close to home, with the advantage of still being able to see your family and still do the same family activities you all enjoy being apart of.

For many students, after they graduate high school, they’re uncertain of what they want to major in. However, community college allows students to double major which can be a stress reliever. The opportunity to double major also helps students gain credits they need to earn for their transcripts.

According to College Raptor, attending community college can make the transition from high school to the real world a whole lot easier. Community college differs from a traditional 4 year college because they are more open to providing students with a variety of different programs to help make their decisions on their desired career.

Another big advantage of community college is that many of them partner with four-year universities.  For example, the University of Maryland College Park Maryland Transfer Advantage Program allows students to earn an undergraduate degree at UMD. Students in the program have access to transfer advising resources and are allowed to take courses at the university for less money. This gives students the opportunity to get their first two years of college for a cheaper price, and with good grades, the guaranteed acceptance to a 4 year university for their bachelors.

If there are students that spend a lot of time at home with their family, going far for college might be a little difficult transition for them.
