On A Budget: Something Special For Someone Special

Valentine’s day is coming around and it’s time to get your special someone something special. If you’re not good at romancing or giving gifts, then honey I’m here to help you out. I’m not an expert or anything but I watched and read a whole lot of romance stuff to know what’s good.

First of all, you have to know about your special person, it could be your partner, family member, friend…or even your pet! Find out what they love and what are their hobbies/interests are. You could either ask them directly what they would like for Valentine’s day or make it a surprise. “How do I do that?” You asked? Well, you can be random about it each day. Every time you guys talk just be like “What do you think about so and so” or “what do you prefer?” If they ask what for, you can always be smooth about and say “I just want to get to know you better” wink wink. Unless you been with each other for more than a year than yeah you’re supposed to know about this stuff, idiot.

Now that you have that out of the way, let me give you some ideas for your love fool self:

For the Sweet-Tooth Lover

If you know the person loves sweets and loves to eat, then buy them some candies or Valentine’s chocolates, you can never go wrong with buying Ferrero Rocher or fruit-filled  chocolates (Cella’s are really good, it’s filled with cherry). If Your boo thang the type that doesn’t like chocolates, drop them…I’m kidding, you can always turn to gummies, ring pops, Nerds, sour patch kids and etc.

If they don’t like candy, then buy them cupcakes or a romantic themed cake, you can go waddle all the way to Georgetown Cupcakes or just go to your local grocery store. If you’re the type that likes to make gifts themselves then you can make the candies/baked goods. You can easily make chocolates by buying chocolate chips, melt it and put in a valentine’s day mold. Once that is done, put it in a cute goodie bag and put other candies that they might like in there. If you don’t want to spend much on the candy part, Party city has individual candies that you can get 15 for the price of a dollar, you can even get the cute goodie bag in there.

For the baking part, you can look up recipes on Allrecipes.com or use any recipe website to find the perfect dessert. My usual go-to is cupcakes, I would buy a cake mix, frosting, and sprinkles and they’re really cheap. At most I’ll spend ten dollars on the ingredients. Well, if you don’t have the pans or cupcake pan needed then maybe it’ll be more. The best things to make that are easy would be cake pops, a cake, cupcakes, and marshmallows covered in chocolate. If none of those interest you, you can always look up more recipes online.

For the Materialist

Is your partner a fan of physical gifts that stay on the shelf until the end of time? Well, there are a lot of Valentine’s Day gifts out now and could be imitating to choose from. What you can always make it your own way. You can find what your person loves and mix it up with something else. For example, if they’re a fan of Star Wars you can find a valentine’s theme star wars gift and put it in a cute box filled gift paper and other things related to Star Wars. In Target, they have a dollar section filled with Valentine’s Day theme ideas, you can use if you’re not trying to  spend too much.

Again, if you want to be all arts and crafts, you can make cards filled with how much they mean to you or make a box out of the memories and favorites things you guys share together. You can even give them a mixtape of songs you think they’ll love or songs that you like. You can stand outside their window in the middle of the night like a creep playing romantic songs until someone in the neighborhood tells you to shut up…that works too. There are a lot of DIY gifts ideas on Pinterest and basically the rest of the internet, so I recommend to look on there for more cute ideas.

For the Adventurous

“I can show you the world…Shining, shimmering, splendid…Tell me, princess, now when did you last let your heart decide?” yes that is from Aladdin. If you’re trying to take them out somewhere special or cute. Take them to the Olive Garden, that place is good as heck with them endless breadsticks. There are plenty of restaurants that are great to set a romantic mood. You can always go to the movies before hitting somewhere to eat. Movies that I recommend to see are “Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn” if you or your partner are DC Comics fans. “Dolittle” which is the OG of the Dr.Dolittle series and it also has Robert Downey Jr as the title character. “A Quiet Place Part II” if you guys are a fan of horror.  During the movies, you can pull that cliche move where you put your arm around their shoulder. Even if your a girl, it still works.

If you can’t afford that, don’t worry. You can make your own dinner at home (if you can cook), you can make smoked salmon with shrimp and broccoli on the side, set the table with classic candles and smooth jazz playing in the back. If that’s not your or their thing and like to explore, take them on a scavenger hunt for treasure to find their gift. Go to D.C. and explore what they have going on,  like the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Garden (go to the garden, it’s really beautiful), the National Zoo and so much more. If you just want to chill at home, you can even have a movie marathon at home with a bunch of snacks, order some pizza or Chinese food or some UberEats.

All that really matters is that you show the person that you care and love them, but if they didn’t get you anything then drop kick them and do these ideas for yourself and call it a day. You don’t need that crap.
